It's Premier League match time at the DW stadium when Wigan Athletic host Liverpool in game-round twelve, on Wednesday.
Wigan lost 2-1 to Blackburn in gameweek eleven, and the Latics failed to create enough chances on a day when their back-line was not effective either. Wigan Sheds while Pedersen's free-kick in the 58th minute curled into the Wigan net to give Blackburn the lead, Martinez's charges squandered two free-kicks, slamming both into the Blackburn wall.
Blackburn sealed their win when nine mintues after their first strike, Roberts beat the Latic's off-side trap to capitalize on an Emerson cross. Wigan's reduced the margin five minutes later but it was litle more than consolation to N'zogbia for his other missed opportunities, on the day.
With just a solitary point from their last three games, the Latics will hope to be inspired by home fans against the Merseysiders, in Wednesday's game. That said, Wigan have just one win to show for their last twelve meetings with the Reds. But that win came in their last game,in March, for whatever that's worth.
Liverpool haven't won at this venue in three years, but the Merseysiders will back themselves after a thumping 2-0 win over champions Chelsea, in gameweek eleven. The victory was inspired by a return to form by their Spanish international striker Fernando Torres. Ironically, Ancelotti had made a bid to sign Torres for Chelsea in the summer. Although the deal didn't eventually transpire, the Chelsea manager was given a dazzling display of Torres's master-class, on Sunday.
With both goals coming in the first half, the Reds effectively shut out the Blues from a game which had many pluses for Roy Hodgson's charges. Reina between the posts, Carragher in a centre-back role, Gerrard in midfield and Kuyt up front stood out on a day Liverpool played their most fluent football of the season.
For Wigan, the following players are sidelined with injury, ahead of Wednesday's game: McCarthy, Pollitt, Boyce, Thomas. Liverpool are likely to miss Kuyt, yet to return to full match fitness, although he did play in gameweek eleven against Chelsea after a month's absence.
Wigan are currently mired in relegation zone and a win on Wednesday will give them a measure of safety; a win for Liverpool could take them as high as sixth on the points table depending on the margin of victory and Newcastle's result against Blackburn on the same day.
The following players were in Wigan's first eleven against Blackburn: Al Habsi, Gohouri, Caldwell, Alcaraz, Figueroa, Thomas, Diame, Stam, Gomez, N'Zogbia and Rodalegga; Di Santo and Roselli played as substitutes.
